> "We wish to hear of attaining the purity of the Buddha's realm." This request has two parts: first asking about the fruit, and next asking about the cause. This is the first. In the past, the Buddha spoke of the Hīnayāna, regarding the single sixteen-foot body as the true body, and likewise regarding a single country of hills and mounds as the true land. Now, being about to turn from the Hīnayāna and return to the Mahāyāna, he clarifies in the various Vaipulya sūtras that the Buddha's bodies respond to beings limitlessly, bringing about the realization that the sixteen-foot body is not the true one; and in this sūtra, by joining the canopies, the distinctness of the various Buddha realms was seen, also making clear that the hills and mounds are not real. Thus, by occasion of the manifestation of the canopies, there is this question. Furthermore, sentient beings have diverse karmas, distinct bodies, and separate abodes, whereas the path of the Buddhas is one, and their bodies and lands are identical. Since the manifested canopies showed that the lands have distinctions, they therefore wished to hear the reason for this. Sengzhao says: "The sons of the elders had long aroused the supreme mind, yet had not cultivated the pure land. That is why Ratnarāśi came together with them to the Tathāgata and manifested the canopies, in every case giving rise to its sprouting. Having seen within the canopies the diverse and exquisite differences among the pure lands of the various Buddhas, their aspiration was set on venerating and practicing them. Therefore, they wished to hear of the matters concerning the exquisite qualities attained by the Buddhas."
