> "In this way, Ratnarāśi, according to his straight mind, the bodhisattva is able to initiate practice." Below this is the second \[section\], which vertically explains how the various practices mutually support each other to reach the ultimate pure land. Sengrui says: "Above, it merely broadly explained the correspondence between causes and fruits for the various practices. Here, it explains that the various practices form a beginning and end among themselves, progressing from the coarse to the ultimate, beginning with the bodhisattva's personal practice of the straight mind and ending with the land and sentient beings being entirely purified." Sengzhao says: "When the mind is straight, faith is solid, and only then can one initiate action and undertake practice. Thus, that which begins the myriad practices is solely the straight mind! This section explains the sequence of practices: the subtle and the manifest gradually cause each other; therefore it begins with the straight mind and ends with the pure land. It is like planting a shoot as thin as a hair, which flourishes into a girth of a hundred spans. The straight mind plants the sprout, and the myriad practices are achieved through it; hence the text says 'according to'. Furthermore, some correlate this sūtra's stages with ranks: although the sūtra text does not explicitly state this, the principle does not contradict it—thus, one may understand that the straight mind corresponds to the Ten Abodes, down to the purity of merits corresponding to the Cloud of Dharma."
