> "Through upāya he manifested illness in his body." Here begins the second \[section\], "Manifesting Illness to Benefit Beings," which has four parts: first, explaining the manifestation of illness through upāya; second, the people coming to inquire \[after his health\]; third, expounding the Dharma for them accordingly; and fourth, hearing the Dharma and gaining benefit. This is the first part. Sengzhao states: "Although he manifests varied transformations and extraordinary traces that are not just one, nevertheless the arising of this sūtra is fundamentally rooted in the manifestation of illness; hence the author specifically introduces this matter."
