- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.312](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2777.1.312)

> "Śāriputra addressed the Buddha, saying, 'World-Honoured One, I am not competent to go there and inquire after his illness.'" This second part is declining. The text has four parts: 1. Offering the decline as not being competent; 2. Briefly stating the reason; 3. Broadly citing the incident of reprimand; 4. Concluding the decline as not being competent. This is the first. \[Dao\]sheng said: "Having reasons to decline is not refusing the command. By relying on words that do not refuse the command, he conveys the significance of Vimalakīrti's expedient means."
