> "Now, one who speaks the Dharma has nothing to speak and nothing to show; one who listens to the Dharma has nothing to hear and nothing to attain." From here down is the second part, showing the method and standard of preaching. The text has two parts: first, abiding peacefully in non-speaking; next, preaching for the sake of beings. The first text has the dharma, the simile, and the conclusion. One who can speak is like an illusion, hence there is nothing spoken and nothing shown; one who listens is like an illusion, hence there is nothing heard and nothing attained. Sengzhao says: "How could 'no speaking' mean not talking? It means being able to have no object spoken of. How could 'no hearing' mean not listening? It means being able to have no object heard. Therefore, one listens all day long and has never heard. 'To show' refers to expounding the Dharma to display it to others; 'to attain' refers to what is attained by hearing the Dharma."
