> "Why? I recall that formerly I entered his house to beg food from him." \[Section\] two briefly explains the reason. Daosheng says: Subhūti had attained the samādhi of non-contention, being foremost among men in it. Vimalakīrti's responsive eloquence was difficult to withstand, so few dared enter his door. But since Subhūti possessed this concentration, he was uniquely able to visit him—his outward entrance relying on this concentration. But once there were the outward marks of relying on concentration, that gave rise to reproof; how could it not have been due to purposeful activity? Moreover, if Shanji visited the poor, the poor would have nothing to give and their minds would have contention. Now, having visited the rich, giving was not difficult for them; thus he conformed to the practice of non-contention.
