> "Just as when you, Upāli, attained liberation through the characteristic mark of the mind, was there any defilement?" This fourth is a question and answer comparing the small to illuminate the great. The text has three parts: question, answer, and explanation. Sengzhao says: "'When you attained liberation' refers to when he first became an arhat and attained the ninth liberation. At that time, his mind was darkly merged with the one principle, and there were no longer any marks of mind. Wishing to use his mind as an analogy to illuminate the minds of sentient beings, he first established his statement."
