> "'It means raising a mind of loving-kindness based on bodhi.'" This fifth \[part\] below broadly clarifies the gift of the Dharma in terms of the ten thousand deeds. The text has five \[parts\]. This first is the four immeasurables. Zhao says: "Material sustenance nourishes the body, while Dharma sustenance nourishes the spirit. The way of nourishing the spirit lies in unseen benefit. Why? Sentient beings wander in transmigration, taking the endless as their road, following one another in obscurity, unable to turn back on their own. Therefore, the mahāsattva establishes virtue not for his own person; a single thought of goodness is entirely for sentient beings. Because it is for sentient beings, vows and practices both bear fruit: when practice bears fruit, one's own merit is established; when vows bear fruit, sentient beings are benefited. When one's own merit is established, one has the ability to rescue beings; when sentient beings are benefited, they have the chance to turn against the flow. Thus, when a bodhisattva first establishes virtue within, sentient beings have already received benefit without. Why must one wait to feed them and uncover bowls before it constitutes benefit? Bodhi is the way of vast rescue. Therefore, for one who raises loving-kindness for the sake of bodhi, that which is benefited in a single thought at one time is boundless!"
