> He asked again: "What is the root of inverted notions?" He replied: "Non-abiding is the root." This is the fifth exchange. The entrenchment of ignorance is fabricated by the deluded mind, having no distinct support to abide in, hence named 'non-abiding'. Sengzhao says: "The mind is like water: when still, it reflects; when agitated, it has no clarity. Murky with folly and craving, fanned by perverse winds, surging and tossing, it has never abided for an instant. Using this to contemplate dharmas, what abiding would it not arrive at? It is like facing a surging spring and demanding its original appearance—this has never been possible. The arising of inverted notions is rooted in non-abiding; the meaning lies here."
