> At that time, in Vimalakīrti's room there was a heavenly maiden. Seeing these great persons and hearing the Dharma that was spoken, she manifested her form and immediately scattered heavenly flowers upon the bodhisattvas and great disciples. From here below is the second \[section\], clarifying that the heavenly maiden mahāsattva and Śāriputra, the Hīnayāna, discuss how the two kinds of liberation differ in realization and application, thoroughly examining and differentiating them so that the vast disparity between Great and Small is known, causing them to return to the fundamental truth. The main text is divided into seven: first, clarifying that the two kinds of liberation differ in the exhaustion of habit-energy; second, from 'stopping in this room' downward, based on principle, clarifying the difference of whether they are identical or not identical; third, from 'in the three vehicles' downward, based on teaching, clarifying the difference of vehicle and non-vehicle; fourth, from 'transforming the female body' downward, with reference to marks, clarifying the difference of transforming and non-transforming; fifth, from 'passing away and arising' downward, with reference to retribution, clarifying the difference of arising-and-ceasing and non-arising-and-ceasing; sixth, from 'the text below' downward, with reference to practice, clarifying the difference of attainment and non-attainment; seventh, Jingming recounts and registers her origin and traces. The first text has seven parts: first, scattering flowers as an offering; second, falling and not falling; third, using spiritual power to remove flowers; fourth, the deva asks the reason; fifth, replying that it is not according with the Dharma; sixth, rebuking and explaining; seventh, concluding the difference in the exhaustion of delusions. This is the first. Sengzhao says: "The heavenly maiden is indeed a dharmakāya mahāsattva who constantly joins Jingming in propagating the inconceivable path of the Mahāyāna; therefore, she manifested as a household spirit sharing the same room. Seeing the great assembly gathered and hearing the Dharma being spoken, she manifested her form and scattered flowers, wishing to instigate debate."
