> "Maitreya, there are further two dharmas by which those called novices are unable to be resolute regarding the extremely profound Dharma. What are the two? First, upon hearing profound sūtras they have not heard before, they become alarmed, afraid, and give rise to doubts, unable to accord with them; they slander them without faith, saying: 'I have never heard this before; where did it come from?' Second, if there are those who guard, uphold, and explain such profound sūtras, they are unwilling to draw near, make offerings to, or revere them, or at times they speak of their faults and vices. If endowed with these two dharmas, you should know that these are novice bodhisattvas who harm themselves and are unable to tame their minds within the profound Dharma." / This is the second part, specifically distinguishing novices. The text has three parts, as before. Resolution in profound principle definitely depends on accumulated cultivation; only by revering the Dharma and honoring the person can one study for a long time. If one slanders the Dharma and disparages the master, cutting oneself off from deep faith and understanding, with one's wisdom not luminous, how could one be resolute in correct contemplation and attain non-retrogression? Sengzhao says: "First, disparaging the Dharma; second, disparaging the person."
