> \[The sūtra says:\] "The Buddha said, 'Your mother's roots of sin are deeply entrenched;'" / The commentary says: Below explains the Tathāgata's response to the petition. Within this there are eight parts. First, reproaching the mother's sins as deep. The mother's commission of sins is explained in detail as in the \*Suiyuan wangsheng \[jing\]\*. Greed and stinginess are the root that sweeps away good and the cause of falling into evil destinies; thus they are called the roots of sin. Drifting ceaselessly and taking birth in continuous succession, they are called deeply entrenched. This reveals that the karmic power, though unseen, is like a great mountain, lamenting worldly matters.
