> The sūtra says: "The Buddha." Commentary: The second \[phrase\] clarifies the master who raised the teaching. The Tathāgata has far abandoned the worldly dust and uniquely transcended the royal court. His perfect wisdom is like a bright mirror; his compassionate vow is like a maṇi jewel. His transforming of self and others is divine play; his benefiting of self and others is unceasing. Therefore he is called "Buddha." Relying on the \*Buddhabbūmi-upadeśa\*, a Buddha is all-knowing and possesses all-modes-knowing; he is free from the affliction-hindrance and the knowable-hindrance; in all dharmas and all characteristics of modes, he can awaken himself, and can also make all sentient beings hear and awaken, like waking from a dream, like a lotus flower blossoming. Therefore he is called "Buddha."
