> "If a bhikṣu commits any one dharma and, knowing it, conceals it, he must be compelled to undergo parivāsa. Having undergone parivāsa, he must be granted an additional six nights of mānāpya. Having undergone mānāpya, he must be granted rehabilitation. His offense must be cleared within an assembly of twenty bhikṣus. If even one person is missing and the assembly does not reach twenty, and they clear this bhikṣu's offense, this bhikṣu's offense is not eliminated, and those bhikṣus are also to be rebuked. This is the proper time." This clarifies the method of repenting a saṃghāvaśeṣa, which has briefly three parts: First, remedying the mental fault of concealment: namely, parivāsa, translated here as "living apart." The Vinayamātṛkā states: "If one commits this offense, according to the days of concealment, one practices the dharma of living apart." "Living apart" means staying in a lower room, not being permitted to reside and stay overnight together with the Saṃgha; although entering the Saṃgha, one is not permitted to converse, nor to engage in questioning and answering; hence it is called "living apart." Even if in mind he does not wish to do so, he is compelled to do so. Therefore, the text states: "If a bhikṣu commits any one dharma and, knowing it, conceals it, he must be compelled to undergo parivāsa." Second, clarifying the method of penalizing the offense: therefore, the text says: "Having undergone parivāsa, he must be granted an additional six nights of mānāpya." "Mānāpya" is translated here as "pleasing the assembly." Because by practicing living apart according to the Dharma, he makes the Saṃgha joyful, it is called "pleasing the assembly"; it is also called "rejoicing of the mind." Although previously his own mind was joyful, he also produced shame and also caused the Saṃgha to rejoice \[...\] the previous joy. Therefore, he is granted a few days; because of these few days, he first attains joy, and the Saṃgha rejoices. Through this, this person repents, no longer gives rise to affliction, and becomes a pure person. Third, the method of granting rehabilitation: therefore, the text states: "Having \[undergone\] mānāpya, the rest is granting rehabilitation." Still possessing superior causes, he changes his mind and repents; the venerable sirs rejoice and immediately grant rehabilitation to purify him. Concerning rehabilitation, the text is divided into two parts: First, according to the Dharma. This offense is grave; it strictly requires an assembly of twenty pure members to be able to rescue that person. Therefore, the text states: "If even one person is missing and the assembly does not reach twenty, and they clear this bhikṣu's offense, this bhikṣu's offense is not eliminated." If the assembly is incomplete, rehabilitation is not accomplished, resulting in labor without merit. Second, not according to the Dharma: therefore, the text states: "Those bhikṣus are also to be rebuked." Because rehabilitation lacks the conditions and the legal act is not accomplished, an offense is incurred. As for the words "This is the proper time": acting in accordance with the Buddha's teaching is called "this is the proper time."
