> The third precept: The month-long robe precept. 1. Purpose of institution: Robes are for supporting the body and are used according to need. Although one previously had robes, they have become worn out, tattered, and damaged; they can only serve to be formally received and kept, but are unfit to be worn. Now, having obtained a small amount of material to make the three robes, in order to replace the old ones, yet because it is a little insufficient to complete them, the Sage permitted an exception: one month. Since keeping an extra \[robe\] beyond this increases greed, contravenes the teaching, and obstructs the Path, for this reason he instituted \[an offense of\] falling. 2. Explanation of the name: Can be known. 3. Specific conditions: There are six: First, if it is new cloth, it must currently be fit for use; since other materials are not permitted, only cloth is permitted. This is the first condition: worn-out three robes. The robes must be worn out, and if one obtains enough material, it can be formally received and thus no exception is permitted. Second condition: obtaining a small amount of cloth that is insufficient. If one does not intend to make the three robes, it only constitutes an offense; the initial precept does not grant an exception. One month clearly requires the third: in order to make the three robes to replace the old ones. Fourth: not transferring it through spoken purification (vikappana) to make the three robes. Fifth: no mitigating circumstances. Sixth: as soon as the limit is exceeded, an offense is committed. Incomplete conditions: Can be known by comparison. This precept is granted as an exception with a one-month limit only for bhikṣus who possess \[only\] the three robes. If one keeps extra robes, as soon as one obtains them, one must perform spoken purification; this precept is not required.
