> The precept against exceeding contentment in accepting robes, the seventh: 1. The intention behind the enactment: When a person who has gone forth encounters the four conditions and loses or has their three robes snatched away, faithful devotees hear of it and, seeing their destitution, make donations. In principle, one should accept according to the donation to cover oneself; internally maintaining a mind of frugality and integrity, and externally not troubling others. Now, when the three robes are already sufficient, to accept beyond measure increases internal fetters of greed and externally violates the donor's intention, which is utterly improper; therefore the Sage enacted the precept. The specific conditions are six: 1. the bhikṣu has had his three robes lost or snatched away; 2. it is an unrelated householder; 3. \[the householder\] donates because of the loss (if it is not because of the loss, accepting it in due season is without offense); 4. he knows it is donated because of the loss; 5. he takes an allowable robe exceeding contentment; 6. receiving it into his hand immediately constitutes an offense. Deficient conditions are evident. Below is the precept text proper. This precept was enacted because a donor sent a robe to a bhikṣu who would not accept it, but took it for the sake of the group of six; the Buddha thereupon enacted the precept.
