> "If a monk, travelling along a road, obtains sheep wool, if there is no one to carry it, he may carry it himself for up to three yojanas. If, with no one to carry it, he carries it himself past three yojanas, it is a niḥsargika-prāyaścittika." / In this full text of the precept there are three clauses: first, the offense; second, permitting three yojanas; third, determining the offense for carrying it beyond. The first clause is understood. In the second clause, "carrying it for three yojanas": travelling on the road, or obtaining sheep wool at a dwelling place, if one needs it one should take it; if there is no one to carry it, one may carry it oneself for up to three yojanas. If there is someone, one says, 'I have this item; please help me carry it.' After that person carries it, in the interim the monk may not help carry it; if he carries it, he commits a duṣkṛta, because it is not entirely by himself carrying it past three. Having the four assemblies of nuns carry it past incurs a duṣkṛta. Carrying other robes besides sheep wool, such as hemp, incurs a duṣkṛta; carrying other things on the tip of a staff also incurs a duṣkṛta. "Carrying past the limit, a niḥsargika-prāyaścittika" is the clause of the offense; the nature of the offense is as above. As for non-offense, the Vinaya states: carrying it up to three yojanas, or less than three yojanas; if someone says they will carry it and in the interim does not help; having the four assemblies of nuns carry it up to three yojanas; or carrying fine wool rope, or carrying wool from the head to make caps and various cloths—none of these constitute an offense.
