The intention behind the enactment is: in general, for one who has gone forth, taking departure from evil as the fundamental principle is proper according to reason. Yet, when one's mind is deluded and about to commit an error, and another admonishes him in accordance with reason, he nonetheless does not comply, but willfully acts wrongly and transgresses. Because the harm incurred is grave, the Holy One had to enact this precept. There are five specific conditions: 1. what oneself has done is an un-Dharmic matter; 2. the other party offers admonition in accordance with the Dharma; 3. one knows that one's own action is wrong and the previous person's admonition is correct; 4. one rejects the admonition and does not accept it; 5. in following through with what one does, one commits the fundamental \[offense\], and for disobeying the words, it is a prāyaścittika. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained. This precept arose because the bhikṣu Channa violated the precepts, and the other bhikṣus admonished him, saying: "Do not have this intention; it is improper." He did not follow their admonition and immediately committed offenses.
