> "If a bhikṣu, angry and displeased with another bhikṣu, drags him out or has another drag him out of a Saṅgha room, it is a prāyaścittika." / In this full text of the precept, there are four clauses: first, the person committing the offense; second, anger in the mind; third, being a Saṅgha room—a private room is not an offense; fourth, from "whether he drags him out himself" onward, concluding with the offense. / The first three clauses can be understood. / Fourth, from "drags him out himself" up to "prāyaścittika" constitutes the offense. Hence the Vinaya states: "Depending on how many people one drags out, an offense is incurred for each. If one drags multiple persons out of one doorway, multiple prāyaścittikas are incurred; if one drags one person through multiple doorways, multiple prāyaścittikas are incurred; if one sends one person out of one doorway, one prāyaścittika is incurred; if one drags multiple persons out through multiple doorways, multiple prāyaścittikas are incurred." The Mahīśāsaka Vinaya states: "If one drags him from the back room to the front room, from the front room to outside the doorway, from outside the doorway to the courtyard, from the courtyard to outside the courtyard, for each step one commits a prāyaścittika." If one takes another's belongings and throws them outside the doorway, or locks another outside the doorway, both are duṣkṛtas. The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: "When dragging another out, if he embraces a pillar, grasps a door, or leans against a wall, for each \[breaking of his hold\] it is a prāyaścittika. If one scolds him and he pulls away with each word, for each \[step\] it is a prāyaścittika. If, angry at a snake or a rat, one drives it out, it is a duṣkṛta; if one says, 'This is a useless thing,' and drives it out, there is no offense." The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya states: "If one is prone to snoring, one should go out to do walking meditation; if one cannot do walking meditation, one should get up and go to a secluded place, and must not annoy others." The Mahīśāsaka Vinaya states: "If one drags out a disciple in order to subdue him, there is no offense. If one brings in an unwelcome person so as to make the other leave on his own, whether he leaves or not, it is a duṣkṛta." Dragging out members of the lower four assemblies is also a duṣkṛta. / The Vinaya states: "Exceptions: having no angry or hateful mind, sending them out according to seniority; sending them away when staying together exceeds the time limit; sending out unordained persons; if someone has broken the precepts, views, or deportment, and one exposes them or expels those who should be expelled; or driving them out because of dangers to life or brahma-practice—in all such cases, there is no offense." / Question: "The previous room precept allowed for close acquaintances, and did not distinguish between permissible and unpermissible; why is this precept restricted to permissible spaces and does not exempt close acquaintances?" / Answer: "In the previous case, it was another's property belonging to the one who borrowed it first. Between close acquaintances there is no forcible intrusion, nor is it a dwelling of the Saṅgha, so it does not distinguish between permissible and unpermissible. Here, it is a Saṅgha room; if it is permissible, there is shared dwelling; if it is unpermissible, there is no shared dwelling, and driving them out is not an offense."
