> “If a bhikṣu makes a robe for an unrelated bhikṣuṇī: prāyaścittika.” This full Prātimokṣa text contains four clauses: first, the transgressor; second, the unrelated bhikṣuṇī; third, making the robe; fourth, the determination of the offense. The first three clauses are self-evident. As for “prāyaścittika”: this is because it is an offense of transgression. The Vinaya states that for that bhikṣu, with every cut of the knife, however much, and with each seam and each stitch, he falls \[into offense\]. Question: Why does he not wait until it is fully made, but instead incurs an offense stitch by stitch? Answer: Because there are many faults in this. For a fully ordained monk of superior rank to make a robe for an inferior person largely gives rise to defiled afflictions and invites outside criticism, while abandoning his correct cultivation; moreover, it allows for the making of non-Dharmic robes. Possessing all these faults, he incurs an offense with each seam and each stitch. Just as when a bhikṣuṇī builds a stūpa, she incurs an offense brick by brick. This is entirely because there are manifold faults. If he again spreads it out to look, stretches, irons, rubs it with his hands, pulls its corners to make it square, attaches a border, or twists cords, all incur a duṣkṛta. As for non-offenses: making it for a related bhikṣuṇī, making it for the Saṅgha, for a stūpa, or if it was borrowed to wear, and he washes, treats, dyes, and returns it to the owner—all these are permitted and do not constitute an offense.
