> Precept 39: Eating Food Not Received. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya-vibhāṣā states: "For five reasons it was instituted that one is not permitted to take food oneself. First, to cut off the conditions for stealing. Second, to provide witness; receiving food from a non-human constitutes reception but does not constitute witness—that is, in the wilderness, \[food provided\] by non-humans is permitted; if among humans, what comes from non-humans, animals, or senseless small children does not constitute reception. Third, to rectify slander. Fourth, to bring about having few desires and knowing contentment. Fifth, to give rise to faith and respect in others; it is so in order to benefit non-Buddhists." / There are four specific conditions: first, it is food; second, it has not been received; third, knowing it has not been received; fourth, eating it immediately constitutes an offense. Below, the text of the precept is properly explained. This precept arose because a bhikṣu who practiced dhūta and begged for food took food by himself in a cemetery and ate it. Householders collectively disparaged him, and bhikṣus brought up the fault; the Buddha thereupon instituted the precept.
