The fifteenth precept: on not patching the niṣīdana. / One already has an old sitting mat; once it protects the body, one should stop; to despise the old and make a new one wastes the gifts of the faithful, increases greed, and obstructs the Path; therefore, patching was prescribed so that greed might cease and the Path advance, and so that things might have the benefit of being fully used. If one now makes another new one without patching it with the old, one violates the holy teaching; hence the offense is laid down. / There are five specific conditions: 1. Having an old niṣīdana; 2. Making another new one; 3. Doing so for oneself; 4. Not patching it with the old; 5. An offense is incurred as soon as it is finished. / Question: If a niṣīdana is not patched and also exceeds the measure, does one incur one offense or two offenses? / Answer: One interpretation says two offenses. At the time of forfeiture, one first cuts away what is beyond the measure, and then confesses. / \[Question:\] If so, for the unpatched one, once it is patched one confesses; why must it enter forfeiture? / Answer: An unpatched niṣīdana has fault throughout its entire body; even if one now patches it, the original fault still remains, so it must enter forfeiture. For one exceeding the measure, the fault lies outside the measure; once it is cut away, there is no fault within the measure, so why should it enter forfeiture? Moreover, returning it to the owner would have no practical utility \[if left oversized\], so it must be cut. If it is made from an old piece, it only has the fault of exceeding the measure, not the transgression of failing to patch. Below, the precept text itself is clarified. This precept was instituted because the group of six violated the regulation.
