> \[Rule\] Thirty: Eating food obtained through the praise of a nun, knowing it to be so, is a pāyattika, except if it was \[arranged\] previously when she was a laywoman, or on a special occasion. The four great śrāvakas, including Kāśyapa, accepted an invitation from a householder. The nun Thullanandā was already in that house; she praised Devadatta and disparaged Kāśyapa. Kāśyapa heard her voice, and the nun then praised him back; the householder and his wife drove her away. For this reason, the precept was formulated: Food obtained through the praise of a nun is not permitted to be received. If one previously accepted an invitation, and the nun praises one afterwards, receiving it is without offense. If one obtains food because of her praise, then one commits a pāyattika. Later, a householder invited monks; after eating, he went away temporarily and had an acquaintance, a nun, go to receive them. Because the precept had been formulated, the monks did not go. When the householder returned, the time for eating had already passed, and the monks missed their meal; the householder was deeply resentful. For this reason, an exception was again opened: except when there is prior friendship. When there is prior friendship, the meal does not depend on the nun; if the nun praises them afterward, receiving it is without offense. If a donor had previously invited a nun, and disliking the food as not good, she urged him to make delicious food, eating it is a pāyattika; even if the nun instructs to add a little ginger into the food, eating it is a duṣkṛta.
