> The text on entrustment in the fourth fascicle of the 'Miscellaneous Recitations' of the Daśādhyāya-vinaya: The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. A sick monk said to his gilānopasthāyaka: 'If you take good care of me and cherish me, when my life ends, I shall give you all the possessions I have.' Having spoken, his life ended. The Buddha struck the mallet and assembled the Saṃgha. The Buddha said to the gilānopasthāyaka: 'Bring all the monk's possessions; the sammukhībhūta-saṃgha shall divide them.' The gilānopasthāyaka said: 'This is not the Saṃgha's property. Why? I am the gilānopasthāyaka; the sick person told me: "If you take good care of me and cherish me, when my life ends, I shall give you all my possessions." Therefore, it is not the Saṃgha's property.' The monks reported this to the Buddha. The Buddha said: 'There is no such rule of giving upon death. When a monk dies, it should be distributed among those present.' There was a sick layperson who said to his relatives: 'If I die, give my wealth and possessions to my son.' Having spoken, his life ended. Later, that monk returned home. After they inquired after one another, the relatives said: 'Your father, when on the verge of death, entrusted these things to you, venerable sir.' The monk replied: 'The Buddha has not permitted me to receive gifts given after death.' They reported this to the Buddha. The Buddha said: 'What was said earlier was for the sake of monks, not for laypeople. You may take them as you wish.' (Drawn from the first fascicle of the Ekottara-saṃgha).
