It must be a dharma that possesses an object: this excludes material dharmas, non-associated formations, and the unconditioned, which are not called supports because they lack the ability to cognize. 2. It must be dominant: this excludes mental factors; although they cognize objects, they are not dominant, and so are not called supports. 3. It can serve as an immediately preceding condition (samanantara-pratyaya): this excludes the eight consciousnesses looking across to different types. 4. It yields its place and guides subsequent minds and mental factors that arise: this excludes the final moment of an arhat about to enter remainderless nirvāṇa.
