> Regarding "giving rise to doubt, false determination, and so forth due to ignorance": this explains the meaning of "defilement being that upon which they depend." All defilements are of three kinds: first, defilement of afflictions; second, defilement of karma; third, defilement of rebirth. The doubt, false determination, afflictions such as greed, and secondary afflictions mentioned here are defilements of afflictions. Here, "false determination" refers to the five views; "greed and the like" refers to hatred and conceit. That which is called "karma" is defilement of karma. Karma refers to the three karmas: meritorious karma, non-meritorious karma, and immobile karma. Meritorious karma refers to the general karma of humans and gods in the desire realm, as well as the particular karma in the five destinies—such as when in hell one temporarily encounters a cool breeze touching the body, and so forth; moreover, when the various sufferings in hell are light, that is called virtuous karma, as when one does not sever roots of virtue, and so forth. Non-meritorious karma refers to the general karma and particular karma of the three evil destinies. Immobile karma refers to that which produces the ripening of the form and formless realms and can induce future births. Defilement is the fruit of ripening induced by afflictions and karma.
