> As for the "four doctrines of partial eternalism": (1) There are those who pass away from the Brahmā heaven and come to be born here; due to cultivating concentration they attain the supernormal knowledge of past abodes; observing the place from which they came, the Brahmā King is still there, and seeing neither his beginning nor his end, they deem him eternal, \[thinking\], "I have come to be born here, so I am impermanent." Therefore, they know that one part of the world is eternal. (2) Hearing that the Brahmā King has such a view that the four great elements are eternal and the mind is impermanent, they either concur with his acquiescence or hear it transmitted: "I take the Brahmā King as standard authority and believe his words; therefore I know that one part of the world is eternal." (3) There are those who pass away from the heaven of debauched pleasure (khidḍāpradūṣika) and come to be born here; having attained the supernormal knowledge of past lives, \[they think\], "Those gods, because they do not debauch in pleasure, abide there eternally; I, because of debauching in pleasure, came to be born here." Therefore, they know that one part of the world is eternal. (4) There are those who pass away from the heaven corrupted by anger (manaḥpradūṣika) and come to be born here; having attained the supernormal knowledge of past abodes, they grasp: "Those gods are not extremely angry and abide there eternally; I, because of anger, came to be born here." Therefore, they know that one part of the world is eternal. This also falls under the doctrine of causelessness of all phenomena.
