> "One class of the two vehicles, \[traversing\] the three realms and nine grounds, each gradually \[severing\] nine grades," and so forth: this means that the three realms are divided into nine grounds: the desire realm, the four dhyānas, and the four formless \[attainments\]. In ground after ground there are nine grades of afflictions, nine times nine making eighty-one grades in total. If one is of dull faculties, one separately generates eighty-one grades of the noble path and gradually severs and eliminates the eighty-one grades of afflictions one by one. Severing six grades of the desire realm, one achieves the fruit of the once-returner. Severing nine grades of the desire realm, one achieves the fruit of the non-returner. Severing the higher realms completely, one achieves the fruit of the non-learner. In each of the grounds, the first eight grades are all severed by both primary and subsequent wisdom, because there is the distinction between being deluded about principle and deluded about phenomena. The ninth grade is severed by primary wisdom, because it is deluded solely about principle, being subtle and difficult to sever. If one is of sharp faculties, one combines the eighty-one grades of the nine grounds into nine clusters, generating nine noble paths to sever the nine grades distinctively. That is, combining the highest-of-the-high afflictions of the nine grounds into one cluster, one noble path severs them. In this manner, up to combining the lowest-of-the-low afflictions of the nine grounds into one cluster, one gives rise to the highest-of-the-high noble path and severs them all at once. Severing the six grades of the desire realm together makes \[the qualification of\] a once-returner; because the six grades of the higher eight grounds are all severed, one leaps over the fruit of the once-returner without entering \[the status of\] a once-returner. Severing the nine grades of the desire realm together makes \[the qualification of\] a non-returner; because the nine grades of the higher eight grounds are all severed, one leaps over the fruit of the non-returner without taking \[the status of\] a non-returner. Leaping over the middle two fruits, one becomes a non-learner. Although sharp and dull \[faculties\], leaping over and gradual \[progression\] have differences, when severing delusions they both give rise to the two paths of uninterruptedness and liberation; it is because these mental states differ in severing delusions and realizing the principle.
