> "First, produced from ripening; second, accumulated, etc.": this is the gate of the five classes of meaning in the \*Abhidharmakośa\*. Four are mentioned here; if one includes substantial real entities, there are five kinds. That treatise distinguishes them broadly across the eighteen elements, and since it includes the unconditioned, it has all five classes. Since this \[context\] concerns only form, there is no solid reality. 'Ripening' means that its nature is indeterminate, because it is produced from wholesome and unwholesome causes. 'Accumulated' means that due to food and drink, what is small grows large, and what is thin is nourished to become fat; hence it is called 'accumulated.' 'Flowing' means equal: 'equal' means uniform, and 'flow' means category of flow, because it is the flowing category of the preceding moment. 'Instantaneous' means the uncontaminated noble gnosis of the forbearance of the dharma of suffering, because it attains culmination in a single instant. 'Substantial real entity': 'real' means solid, and 'entity' means essential substance, because it is not shifted or moved by the four characteristics. Here, the five sense faculties extend to the former two classes, because they are produced from the cause of ripening and are accumulated. Visible form, sound, odor, and tangible object further include flowing, because they are the flowing categories of the four internal dusts preceding them. Sound has no ripening; it extends to the next two classes, because it arises following form with interruptions. The form of the dharma-base has only two kinds: that which arises simultaneously with the initial uncontaminated mind is subsumed under the instantaneous; that which arises simultaneously with subsequent uncontaminated minds is subsumed under the flowing. Since these eleven forms are not unconditioned, they have no solid reality. If regarded according to conventional truth, their substances are all distinct; or they may extend to all five classes.
