> Regarding "recollecting the kalpas of destruction and formation, observing up, down, and across," and so forth: recollecting the kalpa of destruction, one gives rise to the conception of finitude regarding the world. Recollecting the kalpa of formation, one gives rise to the conception of infinitude regarding the world. Downward penetrating to the Avīci \[hell\] and upward reaching the fourth dhyāna, finding nothing further, one gives rise to the conception of finitude. Horizontally everywhere not finding a boundary, at that time one gives rise to the conception of both finitude and infinitude. Inverting the third proposition, in all directions horizontally as well as up and down, one forms the conception of neither finitude nor infinitude. Now I ask those who hold the view of a finite world: after the previous kalpa is destroyed, does the subsequent kalpa arise or not? If you say it arises, then because the previous has a subsequent, clinging that the world has finitude is unreasonable. If it does not arise, then you now abide relying on this world, and clinging that the world has finitude is unreasonable. Based on the view of finitude, one consequently clings to infinitude; infinitude and the rest are all false.
