> Regarding "the Kośa explains eight \[kinds of sound\] solely in terms of being grasped and not grasped, etc.": First is sound caused by grasped great elements, designating a sentient being and pleasing, such as someone's pleasant speech, etc. Because it can express meaning, it is called 'designating a sentient being'. Second is sound caused by grasped great elements, designating a sentient being and displeasing, such as someone's harsh scolding, etc. Third is sound caused by grasped great elements, not designating a sentient being and pleasing, such as clapping hands in rhythm, etc. Because it cannot express meaning, it is called 'not designating a sentient being'. Fourth is sound caused by grasped great elements, not designating a sentient being and displeasing, such as someone slapping with a fist, etc. Fifth is sound caused by ungrasped great elements, designating a sentient being and pleasing, such as pleasant speech of an illusory person, etc., because the body of an illusory person is ungrasped. Sixth is sound caused by ungrasped great elements, designating a sentient being and displeasing, such as harsh scolding of an illusory person, etc. Seventh is sound caused by ungrasped great elements, not designating a sentient being and pleasing, such as lutes and flutes, etc. Eighth is sound caused by ungrasped great elements, not designating a sentient being and displeasing, such as sawing, etc. These eight kinds of sound are established within the first six of the eleven sounds of the Mahāyāna mentioned earlier.
