> The treatise says: "The meaning of concordance \[…\] because their objective aspects are the same." Dankuang explains: Next, he explains the meaning of concorded and unconcorded. This is divided into two. This first explains the meaning of concordance. The first three defilements are called concorded because in the empirical consciousness there is the meaning of the three equalities between the concorded mental king and mental factors. "Because the dharmas of mental thoughts are distinct, relying on the differences of defilement and purity": this shows the equality of essence. "Mind" refers to the mental king, and "dharmas of thought" refers to the mental factors; because the king and factors are not the same, they are called "distinct." Relying on the different objects of defilement and purity, there are these distinctions of mind and dharmas of thought. Mind and dharmas of thought each have an essence, and therefore they constitute concordance. "Their aspects of knowing are the same": this is the meaning of equality in knowing. In relation to the aforesaid distinct defiled and pure objects, if the mental king knows defilement, then defiled mental factors such as greed and anger equally know defilement with the king. If the mental king knows purity, then pure mental factors such as faith equally know purity with the king. Because they know identically, it is called concordance. "Their objective aspects are the same": this is the meaning of equality in taking objects. When the mental king takes those defiled and pure objects as its referent, the defiled and pure mental factors take the same referents together with the king; because they take the same referents, it is also called concordance.
