> The treatise says: "The meaning of unconcordance \[…\] aspects of taking objects." Dankuang explains: The latter three defilements are called unconcorded because the subtly stirring mind of the fundamental consciousness is not yet different from that non-awakening. When it reaches the empirical consciousness, the characteristics of the stirring mind are coarse and different from non-awakening: the stirring mind is the king, and non-awakening is the factor. Here, because the characteristics of this stirring mind are still subtle, and are constantly not different from that non-awakening, how could there be a distinction between king and factors? Therefore it says: "identical with the mind, non-awakening is constantly without difference." This shows the absence of the meaning of equality of essence. Since there is no distinction of king and factors in the equality of essence, how could there be the meaning of identical knowing and identical taking of objects? Therefore it says: "not having the same aspects of knowing or aspects of taking objects." This shows the absence of equality of knowing and equality of taking objects. Inverting the previous concordance, it reveals the meaning of unconcordance.
