> \[Treatise:\] "Second, in order to... without error." / \[Exposition:\] Next, the following seven kinds are particular causes. They serve as the reasons solely for this treatise; they reveal the primary audience and are not merely incidental; and they serve solely to instigate the text in seven places. / The "fundamental meaning of the Tathāgata" refers to the one mind, which is the original and initial awakenings, the foundation of the Tathāgata. Original awakening is called "tathā" (thusness); initial awakening is called "āgata" (come). That the initial and the original are not distinct is called "Tathāgata." Because of this, although sentient beings possess the ultimate principle, they have not yet generated wisdom to illuminate it; thus it is "tathā" but not yet "āgata." Because the Tathāgata is accomplished in reliance on the mind, it is called the fundamental meaning of the Tathāgata. As in the "part on establishing the meaning" and "revealing the correct meaning" within the explanation, this meaning is explained to cause those sentient beings of the three grades of worthiness to accord with contemplative wisdom; hence it is called "correct understanding." That is, remedying pernicious attachments, abandoning the view of a personal self, and being free from inversion in contemplative wisdom is called "without error."
