> \[Treatise:\] "It is called the ālayavijñāna." \[Commentary:\] This establishes the name. "Relying on the tathāgatagarbha, there is the mind of arising and ceasing," etc., is called the ālayavijñāna. "Ālaya" is glossed in translation as "non-submergence" (wumei): this means that although the non-arising and non-ceasing mind of the tathāgatagarbha undergoes arising and ceasing in accordance with avidyā, because the essence of the tathāgatagarbha never perishes or submerges, the marks of its inborn virtues are never lost or submerged, and the wondrous functions manifested by the dharmas are never concealed or submerged, it is properly called "ālaya." Translating its meaning, it is rendered as "storehouse" (cang), which is formed \[by the following\]: undergoing arising and ceasing, it is what is perfumed; acting as cause and effect for the prior seven consciousnesses, it can store all dharmas within its own essence, and store its own essence within all dharmas. Furthermore, it is held and stored as self-love and grasped by the view of self; hence it is called a "storehouse." When one is free from the view of self, this name ceases to exist. If it were solely arising and ceasing, it would not differ from the seven consciousnesses; if it were solely non-arising and non-ceasing, it would not differ from the tathāgatagarbha. Because the two are in union, it forms the ālaya.
