> \[Treatise:\] "Like the contemplative wisdom of the two vehicles \[…\] is called approximate awakening." \[Commentary:\] Below, the second stage is awakening to the mark of change. The text also has four clauses. "The contemplative wisdom of the two vehicles," etc.: these are the persons capable of awakening. Bodhisattvas of the three virtuous stages are called "newly aspiring"; obtaining the door of the emptiness of persons, they are equivalent to the stage of the two vehicles. "Awakening to the change of thought, so that thought has no mark of change": this clarifies the mark that is awakened to. These \[followers of the\] two vehicles and others realize the emptiness of persons and mutually know selflessness; separating from the deluded faculties and objects, they awaken from the dream of change: this is called "awakening to the change of thought." Looking back upon the mark of change, it does not exist at all: this is called "thought having no mark of change." "Because of abandoning the coarse marks of discriminative attachment": this is the benefit of awakening. That is, grasping at self and what belongs to self is called the "coarse marks of discriminative attachment." "Is called approximate awakening": this is the scope of awakening. Although abandoning coarse attachment, they have not yet attained the non-conceptual.
