> \[Treatise:\] "Furthermore, original awakening… not parting from or abandoning \[each other\]."
>
> Commentary: Having finished elaborating on initial awakening, below elaborates on original awakening. Herein are two parts: first, explaining original awakening in accord with defilement; second, revealing originally pure original awakening. The first has three parts: first, a general indication; second, the specific names; third, distinguishing the characteristics. This is the first. Because original awakening is revealed in terms of the aspect of stirring, it says "original awakening is distinguished in accord with defilement." Since it stirs in accord with conditions, it is said to "produce." Although it is produced in accord with conditions, it does not lose its intrinsic purity, so it says "not parting from or abandoning it." Since this initial \[mode of\] according with defilement has two kinds, in accord with this defilement the two phases below are produced. Regarding the "two defilements": first is self-defilement, which is the defiled phases arising from the perfuming of avidyā in the causal stage; second is other-defilement, which is sharing the same essence with sentient beings in the fruition stage. The defilements of sentient beings: based on self-defilement, the phase of pure cognition is produced, because pure cognition is obtained from defilement; through according with other-defilement, inconceivable activity is produced, because superior activity arises from non-defiled production.
