This is the first. What is called "sentient beings who have not entered the correctly determinate group" also refers to persons of the indeterminate group in the Mahāyāna. However, in the indeterminate group there are superior and inferior ones: the superior advance upon the vehicle; the inferior can regress. The previous marks of the aspiration through the perfection of faith were taught for those superior persons whose faith is fulfilled, causing them to arouse the three minds and abide in the correctly determinate stage. Now this cultivation of faith is for those inferior persons who can regress, bringing them equally to the previous aspiration and abiding in the correctly determinate stage.
