> \[Treatise:\] How does one cultivate ... phenomena such as suffering and pleasure. \[Exposition:\] Here the marks of two kinds of patience are clarified. Bearing the harassment of others without harboring thoughts of retaliation is patience in enduring enmity and injury. Also having to endure gain, decline, etc., is patience in accepting suffering. Flourishing and enrichment is called "gain"; loss and damage is called "decline"; excessive slander is called "defamation"; exaggerated praise is called "fame"; explicit flattery is called "praise"; real reprimand is called "ridicule"; oppression is called "suffering"; agreeableness is called "pleasure." These adverse and favorable sensory conditions are called the eight worldly winds; they can agitate practitioners into falsely generating joy and anger. If one abides in equanimity and closely observes suchness, even if one encounters harassment by others one will harbor no intention of retaliation; though one encounters the eight winds, one's mind remains unmoved. Since it is through close observation that the two patiences are accomplished, this also clarifies that there are three patiences.
