> \[Treatise:\] There may be sentient beings \[lacking the power of roots of goodness...\] appearances of men, women, and so forth. \[Exposition:\] Next is the third \[section\], discerning the demonic events \[interfering with\] calm. Within this there are two: first brief, then detailed. In the brief \[treatment\] there are again two: first the hindrances, then the remedies. This is the first. As for saying that sentient beings "lack the power of roots of goodness," this raises the cause of the hindrances; it means lacking the predominant and superior power of roots of goodness, not having none at all. "Then it refers to..." and so forth shows what can hinder. Māras refer to the heavenly māras; by nature delighting in saṃsāra and fearing that someone will escape their realm, they therefore hinder the cultivation of calm. Ghosts refer to dvitīya ghosts. Spirits refer to seductive spirits. Because they cultivated heterodox paths, they fell into these classes; therefore they are collectively called heterodox ghosts and spirits. Resenting and envying practitioners, they also hinder the cultivation of calm. "Or in..." and so forth raises the characteristics of their harassment. The aforementioned three classes can all cause strange transformations, either manifesting terrifying forms to frighten their minds, or manifesting beautiful forms to bewitch their intentions, or manifesting various forms to alter what they focus upon; hence it says "manifesting terrors while sitting," and so forth.
