> Treatise: It is called the ālayavijñāna. (Commentary: This establishes the name. "Relying on the tathāgatagarbha there is the mind of arising and ceasing, etc.," is called the ālayavijñāna. "Ālaya" is glossed and translated as "non-disappearance." That is, although the unarising and unceasing mind of the tathāgatagarbha follows avidyā to become arising and ceasing, because the essence of the tathāgatagarbha does not perish or disappear, its marks of virtue are not lost or extinguished, and the wondrous functions of the dharmakāya are not concealed or vanished. These three are the preceding greatness of essence, greatness of attributes, and greatness of function. This is the correct meaning of ālaya. Reply: The meanings of laiye and alaiye are one; it is merely that earlier scriptures had a different translation as "storehouse" \[zang\]. Arising and ceasing that is formed and serves as that which is perfumed acts as cause and effect for the preceding seven consciousnesses; therefore, it can store all dharmas within its own essence, and store its own essence within all dharmas. Moreover, it is grasped and stored by self-love, and gathered by the view of self; hence it is called "storehouse." When one is free from the view of self, this name is absent; thus, when a bodhisattva reaches the seventh stage, because karmic consciousness is exhausted, they do not grasp a self, and thereby obtain the name ālaya, spontaneous and sovereign. If it were solely arising and ceasing, it would not differ from the seven consciousnesses; if it were solely neither arising nor ceasing, it would not differ from the tathāgatagarbha; due to the conjunction of the two, the ālaya is formed. If it is the ālayavijñāna, it is the cause and effect of the seven consciousnesses, gathered under the eighth consciousness; thus the eighth consciousness serves as cause and effect. Because the preceding seven consciousnesses obtain their seat from this eighth ālayavijñāna, it serves as cause and effect, and is also called the sovereign. This eighth consciousness is wholly arising and ceasing, so it is only called the ā-consciousness and not called the storehouse. If it is the tathāgatagarbha, because it belongs to the aspect of returning to the real, it is therefore called storehouse. It also contains and stores all meanings such as arising and ceasing, neither arising nor ceasing, and the three greatnesses; being gathered within it, it is therefore called storehouse.)
