> Treatise: Furthermore, because of enlightening to the mind-source, it is called ultimate enlightenment; because of not enlightening to the mind-source, it is not ultimate enlightenment. (Commentary: The above briefly clarified the two enlightenments. Next below is the second part, extensively revealing the two enlightenments. Within this there are two: first, clarifying initial enlightenment; next, revealing original enlightenment. In the former there are three: first, a general indication of the cause and fruit, complete and incomplete enlightenment; next, relying extensively on the four marks to explain and accomplish its meaning; finally, revealing that initial enlightenment is not different from original enlightenment. This is the first. As for "mind-source," there are two meanings: original enlightenment tathatā is the source of the defiled mind, and the subtle thoughts of the karmic mark are the source of all defilements. Both the karmadhāraya and tatpuruṣa compounds are valid. That is, at the ultimate stage one enlightens to the fact that the mind of original enlightenment originally never moved, and now has nothing to be stilled; one enlightens to the fact that the mind of karmic consciousness is originally unarisen, and now has nothing to be reduced. One who enlightens to this source is called ultimately enlightened; this is the Buddha fruitional stage. Even if one has some enlightenment, if one has not reached this source, it is not ultimate enlightenment; this is prior to equal enlightenment.)
