> \[Treatise:\] Fourth is defilement unassociated with manifesting form, which can be abandoned relying on the stage of mastery over form. \[Commentary:\] This is the third, the consciousness of manifesting form, among the five minds. The mind's activation manifesting objective realms is called manifesting form. Polluting the pure mind is called defilement. The meaning of "associated" is as explained below. The eighth stage is able to obtain marks, which is called mastery. The nature of form following the mind is called mastery over form. One is able to purify the marks of lands and master tathatā. When a bodhisattva reaches the eighth stage, it is spontaneous and mastered. Before the eighth stage, all wisdom that arose relied on avidyā. When reaching the eighth stage, all wisdom that arises originates from tathatā; therefore it is mastery. What is transformed for others is mastered: one may transform the great ocean into joy, or transform the great earth into gold or other colors; hence it is called mastery over the marks of lands. Or one may transform one's body to fill empty space, or transform one's body to be like a mustard seed; or take birth among animals, or take birth among humans for the sake of other sentient beings, \[…\] taking birth according to one's wish, hence it is called mastery. Or within a single word one expounds all dharmas, or in one \[…\] one expounds, hence it is called "as such." The function of manifesting realms of form arises from the real without delusory realms. Because it is forever abandoned from this point on, it is said that this stage can abandon the defilement of manifestation.
