1.1

Invocation of the Greatly Compassionate One (According to the sūtra, whenever one wishes to accept and uphold [this dhāraṇī], one should first sincerely recite the name of Amitābha Buddha three times, because Amitābha Buddha is Avalokiteśvara's original teacher).

1.2

I respectfully invoke Avalokiteśvara of the moon disc,
Whose vast and perfect body is of purple-gold,
Whose thousand arms constantly extend to manifest in the world,
Whose thousand eyes with radiant light constantly illuminate everywhere,
Whose one thousand two hundred mantra seals
Can fulfill all desires in the hearts of sentient beings.
Whose face is adorned with three eyes throughout,
Who bears Amitābha on the crown and holds precious implements,
Who proclaims and praises the subtle and wondrous Dharma of mantras,
Upholding which one will realize the awakening of a Buddha.
With unhindered eloquence transforming humans and devas,
Foremost among the assembly of bodhisattvas.
Hearing [it] for a moment already extinguishes karma as numerous as grains of dust and sand;
Chanting and recollecting [it] only increases the causes for attaining buddhahood.
The power of the Great Compassion Vow is inconceivable,
Therefore I now constantly praise and recite [it].
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I swiftly know all dharmas;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I soon attain the eye of wisdom;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I swiftly deliver all beings;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I soon attain skillful means;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I swiftly board the ship of prajñā;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I soon cross the ocean of suffering;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I swiftly attain the path of discipline and concentration;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I soon ascend the mountain of nirvāṇa;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I swiftly enter the abode of the unconditioned;
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteśvara: may I soon assimilate with the body of Dharma-nature.

1.3

If I head toward a mountain of blades, the mountain of blades will collapse of itself;
If I head toward boiling liquid, the boiling liquid will be quenched of itself;
If I head toward hell, hell will dry up of itself;
If I head toward hungry ghosts, hungry ghosts will be satiated of themselves;
If I head toward asuras, their evil minds will be subdued of themselves;
If I head toward animals, they will naturally attain great wisdom of themselves.

1.4

Divinely Wondrous Verses and Phrases of the Dhāraṇī of the Vast, Perfect, Unimpeded, Great Compassionate Mind of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara.

1.6

Dedication of Merit for the Dhāraṇī of the Vast, Perfect, Unhindered, Great Compassionate Mind of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara:

1.7

May the merit of reciting [this]
Reach universally to all sentient beings;
May we and all living beings
Together attain the Buddha Way.
