> The Buddha told Bodhisattva Zizai: "Now raise your eyes and look to the west; see the lion kings standing arrayed in the western direction, standing motionless with their constant six attributes, their coats pure white, their chests square and upright. This is all due to the virtue and blessed retributions of their former lives: although they have received animal bodies, they discern good and evil, their feet step upon lotuses untainted by dust and defilement, and they never kill living beings, eat meat, or drink blood. When a lion roars once, those who fly fall and those who run prostrate themselves. Because they held the five precepts and did not commit the three faults, they obtained this retribution; though fallen among animals, in their next lives they will attain the path."
