“You monks, if someone comes and dismembers you limb by limb, you should collect your mind and not allow anger or resentment to arise; you should also guard your speech and utter no evil words. If you give free rein to an angry mind, you will obstruct your own path and lose the benefit of merit. The virtue of patience is something that keeping precepts and practicing austerities cannot match. Only one who can practice patience can be called a person of great strength. If one cannot joyfully endure the poison of malicious abuse as if drinking ambrosia, one cannot be called a wise person who has entered the Path. Why is this? The harm of anger can destroy all wholesome dharmas and ruin a good reputation, so that in the present life and in future lives people will not wish to see you. You should know that an angry mind is worse than a raging fire; you must constantly guard against it and not let it enter. Among the thieves that plunder merit, none surpasses anger. For laypeople who indulge in desires and do not practice the Path, having no Dharma to restrain themselves, anger may still be pardoned; but for those who have left the household life to practice the Path, who are without desires, to harbor anger is entirely unacceptable. It is like a thunderclap striking fire from a cool cloud—it is completely unfitting.
