For this reason the sūtra states: 'The crime of robbery and theft can cause sentient beings to fall into hells and hungry ghosts to suffer. If born among animals, they receive forms such as oxen, horses, donkeys, mules, and camels, repaying former debts with all their physical strength, flesh, and blood. If born among humans, they become servants and slaves to others, with clothes unable to cover their bodies and food insufficient to sustain life, enduring extreme poverty and misery, with their human decencies nearly exhausted.'
