10.10
Having paid reverence to the Three Jewels, next perform kṣamā again:
10.11
We disciples, as spoken above, have already repented of all light and heavy transgressions committed against the Three Jewels. Our other various evils shall now be repented in sequence again. In the sūtras, the Buddha spoke: 'There are two kinds of strong and valiant persons: first, those who do not commit transgressions themselves; second, those who, having committed them, are able to repent.' It is also said: 'There are two kinds of white dharmas that can eliminate all obstacles for sentient beings: the first is shame (hrī); the second is remorse (apatrāpya). Shame is not committing evil oneself; remorse is not causing others to do so. Those with shame and remorse may be called human beings; if devoid of shame and remorse, they are no different from beasts. Shame is feeling abashed before heaven; remorse is confessing and exposing one's committed sins before others.' Therefore, we disciples today take refuge in the Buddha with utmost sincerity, shame, and remorse:
10.12
Namo in the east, One-Jewel-Adorned Buddha; Namo in the south, Candanaguṇa Buddha; Namo in the west, Brahmaghoṣarāja Buddha; Namo in the north, Ratnajñānaprabha Buddha; Namo in the southeast, Siṃhalakṣaṇa Buddha; Namo in the southwest, Ratnacchattrāvabhāsavyomarāja Buddha; Namo in the northwest, Joyful-Advancement Buddha; Namo in the northeast, Maṇiviśuddha Buddha; Namo in the nadir, Ratnagandhavijayarāja Buddha; Namo in the zenith, Mahāyaśas Buddha.
10.13
Namas to all the Three Jewels of the ten directions, exhausting the realm of empty space.
10.14
We disciples, from anādikāla up to the present day, have perhaps believed in heterodox and inverted views, slaughtering sentient beings to make sacrificial petitions to mountain spirits, chimera, demons, and spirits, hoping to prolong life but in the end being unable to attain it; or falsely claimed to see ghosts, and spuriously declared the speech of spirits. Sins such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, with shame and remorse, we expose and repent them.
10.15
Furthermore, we disciples, from anādikāla up to the present day, have perhaps acted arrogantly and presumptuously, holding ourselves high and conceited; or relied on our clan and lineage to disparage and disdain all, using nobility to oppress the lowly, using strength to bully the weak, relying on wealth to slight the poor, or relying on official status to disesteem subordinates; or drunk alcohol, engaged in brawls and chaos without sparing near or distant kin, and remained muddled and drunk all day, not recognizing high or low status. Sins such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, with utmost sincerity, we expose and repent them.
10.16
Or we have been gluttonous and lazy, knowing neither shame nor modesty, greedily addicted to food and drink without fearing hardship, drinking alcohol, eating meat, and making merry with singing and dancing, having no restraint and knowing no cessation; or eaten raw minced fish, consumed the five pungent roots, contaminated the sūtras and images, and pushed aside the pure assembly, giving free rein to our minds without limit or propriety, estranging good people and keeping close to bad friends; or been haughty, deceitful, and self-opinionated, rude, overbearing, and contentious, ignorant of human sentiments, affirming ourselves and condemning others, claiming competence while calling others wicked, attacking and slandering others upon seeing their faults, or making up false words in hopes of lucky gains. Sins such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, with wholehearted sincerity, we take refuge and repent them.
10.17
Or, when facing wealth, we have been unyielding, devoid of integrity and shameless, butchering meat and selling liquor to live by deceit; or lent out and collected interest, calculating hours and selling days, hoarding, being stingy, and greedily demanding without satiety, receiving others' offerings without giving rise to shame; or lacked moral conduct while vainly accepting offerings of faith; or beaten male and female servants, driving and exploiting young servants, without inquiring into their hunger or thirst, or caring about their cold or heat; or dismantled bridges and blocked roads. Sins such as these are immeasurable and boundless; today, with utmost sincerity, we take refuge and repent them.
10.18
Or we have been heedless and self-indulgent, indeterminate and distracted, playing gambling games, backgammon, double-six, and weiqi, gathering in crowds to drink alcohol and eat meat, mutually ridiculing and engaging in idle talk; discussing worldly affairs from month to month and year to year, vainly squandering the days, neglecting meditation and recitation in the first, middle, and last watches of the night, being indolent and lazy, lying down like corpses all day long; not fixing our minds on the six mindfulnesses, giving rise to jealousy upon seeing others' superior achievements, harboring bitter toxicity in our hearts, fully arousing defilements, causing the violent winds of all evils to fan the fuel of evil into blazing fire without cessation, so that the slight good of the three karmas is entirely burned away, and once good dharmas are exhausted, becoming icchantikas who fall into the fiery hells without a time of emergence. Therefore, we disciples today, with utmost sincerity, bow our heads before all the Buddhas and noble assemblies of the ten directions to repent all the various sins mentioned above. Whether light or heavy, coarse or subtle, whether done by ourselves, caused others to do, rejoiced in seeing done, or compelled others to do through force—up to praising those who practice evil dharmas—today, with wholehearted sincerity, we expose and repent them, wishing they may all be extinguished.
10.19
May we disciples, by relying on the merit generated from repenting all these evils, in life after life be compassionate, harmonious, loyal, filial, humble, and self-effacing, know integrity and shame, greet others with prior courtesy, be compliant, upright, cautious, pure, righteous, and yielding, stay far from evil companions and always encounter good conditions, restrain and guard the six sense faculties, reverently protect the three karmas, endure toil and suffer hardship without our minds backsliding, establish the resolve for bodhi, and shoulder all sentient beings."
10.20
The Mahāyāna Sūtra of Lotus Baoda's Inquiries on the Retribution of Śramaṇas:
10.21
A short while earlier, Baoda entered the Fiery Spear Hell. Why is it named the Fiery Spear Hell? That hell is one hundred and fifty yojanas in length and breadth, surrounded on all sides by iron walls, with huge and fierce blazing flames. From its ground, spears sprout forth to pierce the sinners, entering from the bottom of their feet and exiting through the tops of their insteps. The sinners wail and scream, enduring myriad kinds of bitter torment.
10.22
Within the south gate, there were five thousand śramaṇas who called out, saying: 'What sin have we committed now to enter herein?' A horse-headed rākṣasa held a three-pronged iron fork in his hand, striking toward their backs so that it exited through their chests. When the sinners entered into the hell, iron spears pierced their feet, and smoke and flames surged upward, burning through their chests and hearts. In a single day and night they endured myriad kinds of punishment, dying a thousand times and being reborn a thousand times, dying ten thousand times and being reborn ten thousand times; if they obtained a human body, their bodies would be incomplete.
10.23
Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasa, saying: 'What kind of evil karma did these śramaṇas commit to enter herein and suffer such torment?'
10.24
The horse-headed rākṣasa answered Bodhisattva Baoda, saying: 'The śramaṇas herein received the pure precepts of the Buddha but did not guard their comportment; wearing boots and shoes on their feet, they ascended to the latrine without removing them, and with their feet stepped upon Buddha ground and saṅgha ground, or stepped upon the shadows of Buddha images and spiritual stupas. By reason of this, they receive such punishment.'
10.25
Having heard this, Baoda wept with sorrow and departed.
