11.9
"Namas to all such renowned great arhats.
11.10
"Having paid homage to the Triratna, next perform kṣamā.
11.11
"Disciples! Having already confessed the hindrances of kleśas, and having already confessed the karmāvaraṇas, we shall now in due order disclose and confess the remaining retributive hindrances. It is stated in the sūtras: 'When karmic retribution arrives, it is neither in the sky nor in the sea, nor by entering among mountain rocks; there is no other place where one can escape it and not receive retribution. Only through the power of kṣamā can it be eradicated.' How is this known to be so? When the five signs of decay appeared to Śakra Devānām Indra, in terrified panic of heart he turned with utmost sincerity to the Triratna, whereupon the signs of death were immediately extinguished and his celestial lifespan was prolonged. Comparable cases clarified by the scriptures and teachings are not solitary; thus we know that kṣamā can truly extinguish misfortune. Yet if an ordinary mortal does not encounter a good friend to guide and encourage them, there is no evil they will not commit, causing it to be that when great life is about to end and one approaches the final extremity, the evil signs of hell all appear before them. At that very moment, remorse and fear arrive together; not having cultivated good in advance, one regrets only at the final extremity, but having regretted it after the fact, how can it avail? Calamities and misfortunes lie waiting in a different place, rigorously prepared from past lives; one must proceed alone into that distant place, only able to step forward into the great cauldron, where body and mind are shattered and the spirit suffers acutely. At such a time, were one to seek a single bow or a single kṣamā, how could it ever be gained again? Assembly, do not rely on prime years, wealth, or power, indolent, negligent, and unrestrained; once the suffering of death arrives, without asking whether young or old, poor, rich, noble, or base, all are utterly wiped away, arriving precipitously without letting anyone know. For impermanent life is likened to morning dew; though an outgoing breath exists, the incoming breath is hard to guarantee—how can one fail to perform kṣamā for this?
11.12
"Furthermore, once the messengers of the five heavenly signs have come and the sudden ghost of impermanence has swiftly arrived, none in their prime years and robust complexion can escape. At that very moment, what do splendid halls and secluded mansions matter to human concerns? How could high carriages and grand horses accompany oneself? Wives, children, and kin are no longer one's intimates; the seven treasures and precious adornments become playthings for others. Spoken in this way, worldly retributions are all like illusions and apparitions; though the heavens above are joyful, they inevitably turn to destruction, and when life ends, the soul falls into the three evil paths. Therefore, the Buddha said to Subhadra: 'Your teacher Udraka Rāmaputra had sharp faculties and cleverness, able to subdue the kleśas; yet upon dying in the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, he returned to take the body of a flying fox in the animal destiny, so how much more so for others?' Thus we know that before realizing the noble fruits, all must wander and experience the evil destinies in full; if one is not cautious, should one suddenly incur this in a single morning, it will be too late for regrets. It is like now when someone incurs guilt and is taken before the magistrate: this is already a minor suffering, yet the mind and spirit are alarmed and terrified, the family is frightened, and they seek rescue in a hundred ways; the manifold sufferings of hell, compared to this, cannot be matched by a hundred thousand myriad times. The sins that all of us together have accumulated over kalpas are like Mount Sumeru. How could one, hearing of this, remain tranquil and untroubled, neither startled nor afraid? To cause this spirit to incur such suffering again is truly lamentable. Therefore, disciples! Marshalling this sincere devotion, with utmost heart take refuge in the Buddha:
11.13
"Namo Vinīta Buddha of the eastern direction; namo Vajragarbha Buddha of the southern direction; namo Dharmadhātudīpa Buddha of the western direction; namo Pārantacakṣus Buddha of the northern direction; namo Aśokaguṇa Buddha of the south-eastern direction; namo Sarvabhayavidhvamsin Buddha of the south-western direction; namo Vikrāntadamana Buddha of the north-western direction; namo Mahābalaprabha Buddha of the north-eastern direction; namo Pramodamārga Buddha of the nadir; namo Gandhottamarāja Buddha of the zenith.
11.14
"Namas to all such Triratna of the ten directions exhausting the realm of space.
11.15
"Disciples! Regarding all the retributive hindrances from anādikāla until today, the heaviest is foremost none other than the Avīci Hell. As clarified in the sūtras, we shall now briefly describe its characteristics: Around this hell there are seven layers of iron walls, and there are further seven layers of iron nets covering it from above; below there are seven layers of blade forests and boundless fierce fires, extending eighty-four thousand yojanas in length and breadth. The bodies of the sinners completely fill its interior, yet due to the causes and conditions of sinful karma, they do not obstruct one another; the upper fire penetrates below and the lower fire penetrates above, running through and crossing from east, west, south, and north, like fish in a pan with their fat and oil completely melted away; the sinful suffering within it is also like this.
11.16
"At the four gates of its walls there are four great bronze hounds, their bodies forty yojanas in length and breadth, with fangs and claws sharp as blades, and eyes like lightning. There are also boundless iron-beaked birds soaring and swooping to peck at the sinners' flesh. The ox-headed wardens have forms like rākṣasas, with nine tails resembling iron forks; they also have eight heads, atop which are eighteen horns and sixty-four eyes, and from every single eye there burst forth hot iron pellets burning the sinners' flesh, and when they fly into anger and roar, the sound is like a thunderclap.
11.17
"There are also boundless spontaneously arisen blade-wheels descending from the sky, entering through the crowns of the sinners and exiting through their feet; thereupon the sinners' pain pierces through to their marrow, and suffering cuts into their livers and hearts. In this way, they endure all afflictions through immeasurable years, seeking life without obtaining it, and seeking death without obtaining it. For all such retributions, today we bow our heads to the ground in shame, reveal them, and sincerely confess.
11.18
"For the retributions of other hells—the Hell of the Mountain of Blades and Tree of Swords, where heads and bodies fall away, we confess. For the Hell of Boiling Cauldrons and Stove Embers, where one is burned and boiled, we confess. For the Hell of Iron Beds and Copper Pillars, where one is scorched, we confess. For the Hell of Blade-Wheels and Fire Carts, where one is split and crushed, we confess. For the Hell of Tongues Pulled Out and Plowing, where one suffers bitter pain, we confess. For the Hell of Swallowing Iron Pellets and Molten Copper Poured into the Mouth, where the five viscera melt and rot away, we confess.
11.19
"For the Hell of Iron Pestles and Iron Mills, where bones and flesh are ground to dust, we confess. For the Hell of the Black Rope and Iron Nets, where limbs and joints are severed, we confess. For the Hell of the River of Ashes and Boiling Excrement, where one suffers agony and suffocation, we confess. For the Hell of Salty Water and Freezing Ice, where skin splits and one freezes naked, we confess. For the Hell of Tigers, Wolves, Hawks, and Hounds, where one is mutually torn apart, we confess.
11.20
"For the Hell of Clashing Weapons, where one is mutually struck, seized, chopped, and stabbed, we confess. For the Hell of the Fire Pit, where one is roasted and broiled, we confess. For the Hell of Two Stones Crashing Together, where one's skeleton is crushed, we confess. For the Hell of Crowding Black Ears, where one is dissected and flayed, we confess. For the Hell of the Dark Mountain of Flesh, where one is hacked and minced, we confess.
11.21
"For the Hell of Saws and Nailing the Body, where one is severed and cut off, we confess. For the Hell of Iron Clubs and Hanging Upside Down, where one is slaughtered and carved up, we confess. For the Hell of Scorching Heat and Screaming, where one is tormented and aggrieved, we confess. For the space between the Greater and Lesser Iron Ring Mountains, where through the long night it is pitch black without knowing the three luminaries, for such sinful retributions we confess.
11.22
"For the Arbuda Hell, the Nirarbuda Hell, the Aṭaṭa Hell, the Hahava Hell, for all such eight cold and eight hot hells, within each hell there being further eighty-four thousand partitioned subsidiary hells as retinue; where the sinful suffering therein—basting and boiling, agonizing pain, peeling skin and scraping flesh, shaving bones and striking marrow, extracting intestines and pulling out lungs—is of boundless sufferings that can neither be heard nor spoken of: Namo the Buddha! May those who are in these today, who may have been our parents or kin throughout births from anādikāla, and we ourselves, who after death might fall again into such hells—today, purifying our minds with utmost and sincere devotion, prostrating and bowing to the ground before the Buddhas and great bodhisattvas of the ten directions, we beg for compassion and confess, so that all these retributive hindrances may be completely extinguished.
11.23
"May the disciples, relying on the merit generated by this kṣamā of hellish retributions, vow that life after life, through the compassion of all Buddhas rescuing sentient beings from suffering, the iron walls of Avīci will immediately be destroyed, and all will be endowed with a pure land without the name of the evil destinies. May all the instruments of suffering in the other hells turn into conditions for bliss: mountains of blades and trees of swords transforming into jewelled couches; boiling cauldrons and stove embers becoming apparitional births on lotuses; ox-headed wardens abandoning cruelty and all generating compassion without evil thoughts. May the sentient beings of the hells be freed from the fruits of suffering and create no further causes, equally receiving peace and joy like that of the third dhyāna, simultaneously bringing forth the unexcelled resolve for awakening."
11.24
The Mahāyāna Padma Baoda Dialogue on Retribution for Śramaṇas Sūtra
11.25
A short while before, Baoda entered the Hell of Drinking Molten Iron Pellets. Why is it named the Hell of Drinking Molten Iron Pellets? That hell is three hundred yojanas in length and breadth, with iron walls surrounding it on all sides, where smoke and fire arise together. On its ground there is a cauldron filled with iron pellets boiling in turbulence, beside which stands a horse-headed rākṣasa holding an iron ladle, ladling the molten iron pellets.
11.26
Within the eastern gate were eight thousand śramaṇas wailing and weeping, their body hair ablaze with smoke and flames rising together, and the sinful bhikṣus stumbling and collapsing at every step. Horse-headed rākṣasas held three-pronged iron forks in their hands, thrusting them toward their chests so that they came out through their backs; the tines of the forks were ablaze, piercing through from left to right. Hell-warden yakṣas held iron hooks in their hands, aiming at their chins and hooking through so that they came out of their mouths.
11.27
At that time, the sinful people's eyes and mouths were forced wide open. Then the hell-wardens held iron ladles in their hands, scooping up molten iron pellets, aiming at the sinful people's mouths and pouring the iron pellets into them. From all their six sense faculties smoke and blazing flames poured forth together, and within their bodily pores fire burned as well. In a single day and a single night they underwent myriad forms of punishment, dying a thousand times and being born a thousand times, dying ten thousand times and being born ten thousand times. If they managed to be reborn as humans, their bodies would be incomplete, deaf, blind, mute, never hearing the names of the Buddhas, nor seeing a thousand Buddhas appear in the world.
11.28
The Bodhisattva Baoda asked the horse-headed rākṣasas: "What karmic actions did these śramaṇas perform to suffer such retribution?"
11.29
The horse-headed rākṣasas replied: "These śramaṇas received the pure precepts of the Buddha but did not maintain them purely. Consuming the offerings of faith from people, they instead failed to maintain the fasts. Eating saṅgha food at night, they also prepared food with their own hands and took it to eat themselves without any sense of shame. Due to these causes and conditions, they undergo such retribution."
11.30
When Baoda heard this, he wept sorrowfully and departed.
