12.10
Having paid reverence to the triratna, next perform kṣamā again:
12.11
"We disciples! Having now completed kṣamā for the retributions of the hells, we should now next perform kṣamā for the retributions of the three evil destinies. The Buddha said in a sūtra: 'Because people of many desires seek much gain, their suffering and affliction are also great; contented people, even when lying on the ground, still consider it joyful; discontented people, even when dwelling in the heavenly palaces, are still unsatisfied.' Yet worldly people, when suddenly faced with an urgent catastrophe, can give away wealth without reckoning how much, not knowing that this very body teeters above the deep pit of the three paths—once a breath does not return, they are bound to fall. If suddenly a spiritual friend teaches them to cultivate merit and make provision of future wholesome dharmas, they cling to this stingy mind and have no willingness to act. People like this are foolish and deluded in the extreme! Why is this so? The Buddha said in a sūtra: 'At birth, one comes without bringing a single coin, and in death, one also departs without holding a single coin. Tormenting the body to amass [wealth] brings worry and distress for it; it is of no benefit to oneself and in vain becomes the possession of others. With no good on which to rely and no virtue on which to depend, when life ends, one falls into the evil destinies.' Therefore, we disciples, today with the utmost sincerity knock our heads to the ground and with earnest devotion take refuge in the Buddha:
12.12
Namo Buddha Mahāprabhāsa in the eastern direction; namo Buddha Gaganavihārin in the southern direction; namo Buddha Vajrakrama in the western direction; namo Buddha Anantabalavijaya in the northern direction; namo Buddha Anantarāja in the south-eastern direction; namo Buddha Ripuhārakāra in the south-western direction; namo Buddha Vimalaprabhā in the north-western direction; namo Buddha Suvarṇaprabhāsaghoṣa in the north-eastern direction; namo Buddha Siṃhavikrīḍita in the nadir; namo Buddha Candradhvajadhipati in the zenith.
12.13
Namas to all the triratna throughout all space in the ten directions such as these.
12.14
We disciples today next perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in utter lack of discernment and knowledge in the animal destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in bearing heavy loads and hauling plows to repay past debts in the animal destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in lacking autonomy, being hacked, stabbed, slaughtered, and butchered by others in the animal destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in being footless, two-footed, four-footed, or multi-footed in the animal destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in having one's body gnawed and devoured by tiny parasites from within the feathers and scales in the animal destiny. We perform kṣamā for all such measureless and boundless retributions of sin in the animal destiny, today with utmost sincerity taking refuge and offering kṣamā.
12.15
We disciples today next perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in perpetual hunger in the hungry ghost destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in never hearing the word for water or gruel for hundreds of thousands of tens of millions of years in the hungry ghost destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in consuming pus, blood, and excrement in the hungry ghost destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in all limbs and joints catching fire whenever moving the body in the hungry ghost destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in having huge bellies and narrow throats in the hungry ghost destiny. We perform kṣamā for all such measureless and boundless retributions of suffering in the hungry ghost destiny; therefore, today with utmost sincerity we knock our heads to the ground, take refuge, and offer kṣamā.
12.16
We disciples today next perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in flattery, deceit, and false pretense among all spirits, ghosts, and asuras; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in carrying sand and hauling stones to fill rivers and dam seas in the spirit and ghost destiny; we perform kṣamā for the retribution of sin consisting in being spirits, ghosts, rākṣasas, and kumbhāṇḍas, eating raw flesh and blood, and enduring this hideous ugliness. We perform kṣamā for all such measureless and boundless retributions of sin among spirits and ghosts; today, knocking our heads to the ground toward the Buddhas and great bodhisattvas of the ten directions, we plead for mercy and offer kṣamā, that they may all be extinguished.
12.17
"May we disciples, by relying on the merit generated from this kṣamā for the retributions of animals and the like, in life after life extinguish the defilement of foolishness, recognize our karmic conditions for ourselves, cut off the body of the evil destinies through luminous wisdom. May we, by the merit generated from kṣamā for the retributions of hungry ghosts and the like, in life after life forever leave behind the suffering of stinginess, greed, hunger, and thirst, and constantly partake of the flavor of ambrosia and liberation. May we, by the merit generated from kṣamā for the retributions of spirits, ghosts, and asuras, in life after life be upright, straightforward, and free of flattery, leave behind the causes of wrong livelihood, eliminate the fruits of ugliness, and bring benefit and fortune to humans and devas. May we disciples, from this day forth until reaching the bodhimaṇḍa, definitively never receive the retribution of the four evil destinies, unless solely out of great compassion for the sake of sentient beings, enduring it untiringly by the power of our vows."
12.18
Mahāyāna-padma-baoda-paripṛcchā-vipāka-śramaṇa-sūtra
12.19
Shortly after, Baoda entered yet another hell, called the Hell of Flying Knives. That hell was fifteen yojanas in length and breadth, enclosed on all sides by iron walls and covered above with an iron net. Fierce winds of fire blew from the four corners of that citadel against iron mountains; as the mountains ground against one another, they turned into sharp knives, and those knives were double-edged, like needle tips. Through the void they clanged and clashed like thunder, and the knives struck against one another like lightning bolts, descending from the sky to pierce the sinners' heads, entering from their heads and exiting from under their feet, entering through their backs and exiting from their chests, coming out on the left and entering on the right, as smoke and fire blazed together. In a single day and night they endured myriads of torments, dying a thousand deaths and living a thousand lives, dying ten thousand deaths and living ten thousand lives. If they ever obtained human form, foul sores would break out covering their whole bodies all over.
12.20
Baoda asked, "What deeds did these śramaṇas perform to endure such suffering?"
12.21
The horse-headed rākṣasa replied, "These śramaṇas received the pure precepts of the Buddha but did not keep them purely. In their hearts there was no compassion: they drank liquor, ate meat, and claimed there is no karmic retribution. The sin of eating meat cannot be excused by principle. Due to these causes and conditions, they endure this punishment."
12.22
Hearing this, Bodhisattva Baoda wept in sorrow and departed.
